Fez – Various streets and major roadways in the Fez prefecture are witnessing a worrying and continuous rise in traffic accidents. These incidents, which occur almost daily, leave behind victims, injuries, and significant material losses. This situation once again raises burning questions about the real reasons behind this persistent hemorrhage on the roads of Morocco’s spiritual capital.
According to consistent testimonies from citizens and drivers, as well as field observations, two primary factors are behind most of these horrific accidents: excessive speeding and the absence or inadequacy of road signage in several critical locations.
Some major arteries, such as the Ain Chkef and Sefrou roads, have transformed into what resemble racetracks, especially during evening hours when legal speed limits are disregarded. This leads to violent collisions, the outcomes of which are often tragic.
The noticeable lack of road signage in many areas further exacerbates the dangerous situation. “Fez News” observed the absence of speed limit signs and warning signs at major intersections, as well as the fading of pedestrian crosswalk lines on main streets. This puts the safety of both drivers and pedestrians at imminent risk.
In this context, a civil society activist specializing in road safety in the city stated, “What we are experiencing is the inevitable result of two things: the recklessness of some drivers who disregard the law, and the silence and inaction of the authorities responsible for maintaining and upgrading the road infrastructure. We cannot demand that drivers respect the law when the signs that are supposed to guide and direct them are missing.”
The speaker called for the intensification of security campaigns to crack down on speeding violations. At the same time, he urged elected councils and local authorities to launch an urgent and comprehensive program to review and rehabilitate all horizontal and vertical road signage throughout the city, before the series of lives lost on the asphalt of Fez continues.
