Algiers – On Sunday, July 27, 2025, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Masad Boulos, the U.S. President’s Adviser for African and Middle Eastern Affairs, who is on an official visit as part of a regional tour covering several countries in the area.
The meeting, attended by senior Algerian and American officials, focused on ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Algeria and the United States. In addition, regional and international issues were discussed, including the situation in the Sahel region, the Russia-Ukraine war, and developments in the Middle East.
However, the most prominent topic during the meeting was the Western Sahara dispute. This comes amid the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a serious, realistic, and credible solution. This evolving international stance places Algeria in a diplomatically challenging position.
The visit takes place amid a noticeable diplomatic deadlock and tension between Algeria and Morocco, in which Algeria has been a principal party. Through this tour, the U.S. official aims to reduce tensions between the two countries and promote the resumption of the stalled political process, supporting regional stability and enhancing prospects for a settlement.
While the United States continues to affirm its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, Algeria faces increasing diplomatic challenges as international support shifts decisively in favor of the Moroccan position on the diplomatic stage.
