Strike and Protest in Oued Amellil over Discovery of Animal Bones Sparking Local Controversy

This Sunday morning, a strike and protest took place in Oued Amellil, in the province of Taza, where several restaurant and café owners held a demonstration in front of the Royal Gendarmerie barracks. They demanded an urgent and thorough investigation into a widely circulated video and photos showing animal bones allegedly found in a vacant lot near the city.

The footage, shared by civil activist Amer Al-Qandousi, sparked significant debate and numerous questions on social media, particularly concerning an image depicting a skull believed to belong to a donkey, which drew criticism from local residents and professionals. They emphasized the damage this has caused to the reputation of the tourism and restaurant sector.

In response, the regional veterinary service affiliated with “LONSSA” issued a statement confirming that the bones inspected on-site belonged to cattle and found no indications of any illegal activity. However, the skull captured in the photo, which some suggest does not belong to a cow, raised new questions about whether the veterinary authorities examined all the bones documented.

Meanwhile, the National Office for Food Safety released a report affirming that the bones discovered on Sunday morning in Oued Amellil “are unrelated to remains of other animals,” aiming to reassure the public.

The protesting restaurant and café owners called on the relevant authorities to transparently reveal the truth, hold accountable anyone responsible for compromising public safety or damaging the professionals’ reputation, and implement measures to protect businesses linked to food and meat.

The local community awaits further developments in this case, which has stirred significant public concern, with calls for official clarifications to restore citizens’ trust and safeguard the rights of professionals.
