Iran’s UN Envoy Challenges Israeli Narrative and Holds America Responsible

Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, affirmed that Israel’s narrative about facing an existential threat is “a false narrative,” emphasizing that “Iran did not attack Israel and did not start any war.” Speaking at a press conference at UN headquarters in New York, Iravani stated: “Let me be clear, Iran did not attack Israel. Iran did not start any war. What is called the existential threat narrative is false.”

These statements came during Iravani’s address to the UN Security Council on Monday, where he defended Iranian strikes on Israel as “proportionate defensive operations directed exclusively at military targets and their associated infrastructure.” He noted that Iran is exercising its legitimate right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Iran’s Accusations Against the United States for Complicity

The Iranian ambassador directed accusations at the United States, affirming it is the only party capable of stopping Israeli aggression. Iravani said: “Without American weapons, intelligence, and political support, this attack could not have happened. The United States will bear responsibility for this illegal act.”

He added that “Israel, which is considered the most brutal and violent regime in the world, carried out these barbaric attacks with full intelligence and political support from the American government.” He warned that “any country that assists Israeli aggression will bear legal responsibility for the consequences.”

Iravani’s statements come amid ongoing military escalation since Friday, June 13, when Israel launched a large-scale attack on scattered sites in Iran, targeting nuclear, military, and civilian locations. Israeli attacks resulted in the deaths of 78 Iranians and injured more than 320 people, mostly women and children, according to Iranian figures.

Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles at Israel, resulting in at least 24 Israeli deaths and hundreds of injuries. Iravani confirmed that “Iran’s response was limited to military targets,” noting that his country “respects international humanitarian law and we did not target civilians.”

Targeting Nuclear and Media Facilities

The Iranian ambassador emphasized the seriousness of Israel’s targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities, saying: “Israel, with its attack on Iran, crossed all red lines and deliberately targeted a peaceful nuclear facility operating under full safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and this is a dangerous and illegal act.”

Iravani also condemned the Israeli strike on the Iranian government television building during a live broadcast, describing it as “a horrific attack that constitutes a blatant war crime and direct assault on press freedom.” He added that this aggression came “exactly when the sixth round of nuclear negotiations was about to resume in Muscat.”

Position on Negotiations and Diplomatic Solutions

Iravani indicated that Iran had brought “a new proposal aimed at bridging differences” in nuclear negotiations, while the United States responded “in bad faith.” He confirmed that Israel’s goal from the attack is to “kill diplomacy, sabotage negotiations, and drag the region into a broader conflict.”

In this context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that “one phone call from Washington is enough to silence someone like Netanyahu,” adding that this “could pave the way for a return to diplomacy.” He accused Netanyahu of “deceiving” successive American presidents and pushing them to fight his private wars for nearly three decades.

Call for Security Council Action

Iravani called on the UN Security Council to “act now” and condemn Israeli aggression, warning that “its silence and indifference undermine its credibility and the foundations of the United Nations.” He confirmed that Iran “will continue to work within the framework of international law,” emphasizing that his country “will not hesitate to defend our people, our territory, and our sovereignty.”

Iravani concluded by saying that “Israeli aggression constitutes a declaration of war,” confirming that “Iran will use its legitimate right to defense, and our response will be legal, balanced, decisive, and will come at a time of our choosing.”
