The International Network for Human Rights and Development has issued an open letter to the international community and various UN and regional bodies, including the United Nations, its Human Rights Council, the European Union, and international human rights organizations, calling for an independent and urgent international investigation into the serious violations committed by the Algerian military in the Tindouf camps located in southwestern Algeria.
According to the letter obtained by Telquel, the Algerian army has committed a series of horrific crimes against the camp residents, including the killing of 21 Sahrawis detained within the camps, burning of unarmed civilians, shooting at them, and using drones to target them. The letter also documents cases of torture, enforced disappearances, and cruel and degrading treatment.
The network emphasized that these crimes constitute blatant violations of international humanitarian law and human rights values. It highlighted that the Algerian military regime systematically intimidates civilians in the Tindouf camps amid a total absence of international oversight, which contributes to widespread impunity.
The International Network for Human Rights and Development demands the following:
- Launch independent international investigations into all violations committed by the Algerian army inside the camps.
- Bring the civilian and military officials of the Algerian regime responsible for these crimes to international justice.
- End the detention of Tindouf camp residents by the Algerian regime and Polisario militias, and grant human rights organizations full and free access to the area for investigation and monitoring.
- Guarantee freedom of movement and fundamental rights for detainees in the camps, including protection and humanitarian care.
- Terminate the management of the Tindouf camps by the Polisario militias, described in the letter as “terrorist,” and place the camps under neutral international supervision.
These calls come amid increasing human rights reports documenting the suffering of camp residents under harsh humanitarian conditions, coupled with clear complicity by Algerian authorities and worrying neglect by the international community regarding these grave violations.
