Lack of Medical Equipment and Shortage of Health Personnel Drive Patients from Tazaounate to Hospitals in Fès and Meknès

Many patients in the Tazaounate region are facing daily struggles with poor healthcare services and insufficient medical equipment, forcing many to travel to hospitals in Fès or Meknès for necessary treatments. There has been a growing demand for improvements in the region’s health infrastructure and an increase in medical and human resources.

According to members of civil society, hospitals in Tazaounate suffer from a severe shortage of medical staff and basic equipment, making referrals to medical institutions outside the region a frequent necessity, even for urgent cases or basic treatments.

Activists in the region expressed concern over the current healthcare situation, stressing that “the right to treatment is constitutionally guaranteed, and it is unreasonable for an entire population to remain dependent on referrals and travel.” They highlighted the persistent absence of specialist doctors and the lack of essential equipment such as X-ray machines and lab testing facilities.

The residents of Tazaounate are urging the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to intervene urgently by reassessing the region’s health map and allocating additional financial resources to equip healthcare centers and reinforce staffing with doctors and nurses. This would ensure the dignity of patients and their right to medical care without the burden of travel and associated costs.
