Reports of Syrian Security Forces Arresting Secretary-General of PFLP-GC

Damascus: Syrian media outlets, citing sources in the capital Damascus, have reported that Syrian security forces have arrested the Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command (PFLP-GC), Talal Naji, along with his chief of staff.

Syrian “Sham” channel stated in a breaking news report that “the General Security forces have arrested the Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command, Talal Naji, and his chief of staff,” without providing further details about the reasons for the arrest or its specific timing.

It is worth noting that the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command was founded in 1968 following its split from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. It had established its main headquarters in Syria for many years and was considered a prominent supporter of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This arrest comes in a context of previous detentions targeting Palestinian leaders in Syria. In April of last year, the new Syrian authorities arrested two senior officials of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, Khaled Khaled and Abu Ali Yasser.

Media sources at the time confirmed that Khaled’s arrest came less than 48 hours after a visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Damascus and his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara. Syrian media outlets reported that Khaled and Yasser were accused of “espionage with Iran.”

The arrest of Talal Naji raises questions about the nature of the shifting relationship between the Syrian authorities and the Palestinian factions residing in the country, and its repercussions on the Palestinian and regional political landscape. No official comment has yet been issued by the Syrian authorities or the PFLP-GC regarding these reports.
