Washington D.C. – The United States has escalated its rhetoric towards Iran, issuing a direct and stern warning against Tehran’s continued support for the Houthi group in Yemen. President Donald Trump’s administration asserted that it would not tolerate what it described as Iran’s “lethal support” for the Houthis, holding Tehran fully responsible for ongoing attacks targeting international navigation and U.S. interests in the Middle East region.
The new warning came from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who took to the social media platform “X” to convey his country’s firm stance, writing: “We see your lethal support to the Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing. You have been warned. You will pay the price, at the time and place of our choosing.”
Washington views Iran’s persistent support for the Houthis as an integral part of its broader regional policy, which includes backing armed proxies in various conflict zones, in addition to its controversial nuclear and missile programs. The U.S. administration bases its accusations on detailed intelligence reports and military seizures that confirm the ongoing smuggling of Iranian weaponry to the Houthis, including advanced missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles capable of launching long-range attacks.
While U.S. strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen continue, Washington has significantly bolstered its military presence in the region. This includes the deployment of advanced strategic bombers and air defense systems, as well as the dispatch of aircraft carriers to the Gulf region, as part of preparations to counter any unexpected developments or potential escalations.
The Trump administration considers any attack launched by the Houthis to be an indirect Iranian action, stating unequivocally that Tehran “will be held accountable” for these activities. Simultaneously, Washington continues to keep the military option on the table as a pressure tactic, despite maintaining open channels for nuclear negotiations through the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman.
The United States accuses the Houthi group of carrying out increasingly dangerous attacks in the Red Sea region, which directly threaten international maritime traffic and the global economy. Washington contends that the group is using the “support for Palestinians” as a pretext to justify this dangerous escalation. Conversely, the current U.S. military campaign is seen as a crucial component of a broader strategy aimed at containing Iran’s growing influence in the region and undermining its ability to destabilize the regional order.
Amidst Tehran’s continued policy of “public denial and covert support” for its proxies in the region, Washington asserts in strong terms that “the era of impunity is over,” and that the coming days will serve as a true test of Iran’s regional intentions and its commitment to the principles of international law and regional security.
