Washington Withdraws Confidence in UN Envoy to Western Sahara, Considers Freezing MINURSO Funding

Washington – Well-informed sources have revealed a growing trend within the US administration to withdraw its confidence in the UN Envoy to the Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, while seriously considering a halt in funding for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

In a related development, senior US official Lisa Kenna is scheduled to meet today, Thursday, with UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura at the US State Department to formally inform him of the Trump administration’s stance on the Sahara issue. This stance includes sharp criticism of the United Nations’ failure to achieve any tangible progress in this decades-long conflict.

Sources indicate that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently suggested moving towards finding solutions for this issue outside the traditional framework of the United Nations, citing its “legacy of failure in reaching a lasting solution” to this regional conflict.

This US move comes amidst a political stalemate in the UN’s efforts to find a settlement for the dispute over the Western Sahara and growing criticism of the UN mission’s working mechanism and the role of its special envoy.

Withdrawing US confidence from the UN envoy and considering a halt in MINURSO funding could represent a significant blow to the UN’s efforts in the region, raising questions about the future of international mediation in this sensitive issue.

It is noteworthy that the United States is an influential member of the UN Security Council and a major contributor to the UN budget. Therefore, any such decision would have significant repercussions for the trajectory of the Western Sahara issue and the international efforts to resolve it.

As of now, there has been no official comment from the United Nations or the office of the UN Envoy regarding these reports. It remains to be seen what will result from the meeting between the US official and de Mistura and whether Washington will proceed with its escalating steps towards the UN’s working mechanism in the Western Sahara file.
