U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the United States’ unwavering position in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, supporting Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a serious and realistic solution to the dispute. He emphasized that the autonomy plan is the only basis for a fair and lasting solution.
This statement came during Rubio’s meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Washington, D.C. A press release from U.S. State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce highlighted Rubio’s statement that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution” to the ongoing conflict. He also reaffirmed former President Donald Trump’s call for the involved parties to engage in negotiations without delay, based on this proposal as the sole framework for talks toward a mutually acceptable resolution.
The statement further underscored that the United States will continue to support this goal by pushing for direct negotiations between the concerned parties.
The meeting also highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Morocco, aimed at strengthening peace and security in the region, under the leadership of both President Trump and King Mohammed VI. The discussions explored ways to enhance cooperation in various areas, including building on the Abraham Accords and expanding trade relations between the two nations to benefit both the American and Moroccan peoples.
In a related development, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita also met with Mike Waltz, U.S. National Security Advisor, where the talks focused on the multi-dimensional strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco, as well as regional issues of mutual interest.
