Major Transformation on the Horizon: 10 Million Dirhams for Modernizing the Sidi Yahya Beni Zeroual Weekly Market in Ghassai

Taounate, March 2025 – A significant financial package of 10 million dirhams has been allocated to modernize and develop the Sidi Yahya Beni Zeroual weekly market in the Ghassai area of Taounate province, under a specific agreement recently signed. The project, fully funded by the Fez-Meknes Regional Council, aims to bring about a qualitative leap in this vital commercial space, improve the conditions for traders and support the local economy. The Regional Agency for Project Implementation (AREP) Fez-Meknes will oversee its execution.

This ambitious project includes a comprehensive modernization of the market’s facilities, equipment, and infrastructure, including the creation of modern platforms for marketing products, the development of sidewalks and parking lots, the provision of essential services, and the establishment of green spaces. The project aims to organize and promote local trade, encourage local products, improve working conditions, and contribute to creating job opportunities in the region.

The project falls within the Fez-Meknes Regional Development Program 2022-2027, specifically under the second strategic axis aimed at “Sustained Growth of Economic Systems and Promotion of Employment.” The Regional Agency for Project Implementation will be responsible for the full supervision of the project, from the studies to the completion of the works, under the monitoring of governance bodies comprising a steering committee, a regional technical committee, and a provincial committee in Taounate to ensure optimal implementation.

In addition to the Regional Council and the Regional Agency, the agreement includes the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, the Wilaya of the Fez-Meknes region, the Taounate Provincial Prefecture, and the Sidi Yahya Beni Zeroual Communal Council as signatory parties. The financial allocations are scheduled to be transferred during the years 2025 and 2026, with ownership of the market, after its modernization, reverting to the Sidi Yahya Beni Zeroual Commune, which will also be responsible for its management and maintenance.
