The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, stated on Monday in Fes that ongoing water projects will contribute to increasing the total storage capacity of basin dams from 6.1 billion cubic meters to 8.14 billion cubic meters, an increase of more than 2 billion cubic meters.
This announcement was made during his chairing of the Board of Directors meeting of the Sebou River Basin Agency for the 2024 session. Baraka reviewed the progress of dam projects and the government’s strategy to address water scarcity challenges and ensure water security.
Baraka highlighted that the filling of the Medaz Dam in the Sefrou province has begun, with a capacity of 700 million cubic meters. He also noted the completion of the Koudiat El Berna Dam in Sidi Kacem province, with a capacity of 12 million cubic meters, designated for irrigation and drinking water supply. Additionally, the construction of the Sidi Abou Dam, with a capacity of 200 million cubic meters, and the Ratba Dam in Taounate province, with a capacity of 1.9 billion cubic meters, is ongoing, with completion rates of 87% and 33%, respectively.
As part of efforts to strengthen water resources, Baraka explained that the volume of water transferred between the Sebou and Bouregreg basins has exceeded 610 million cubic meters, helping to meet drinking water needs in areas stretching from Rabat to northern Casablanca. He also mentioned the ongoing pollution removal project in the Sebou basin to ensure the quality of transferred water, including the establishment of treatment plants for olive mill waste and the implementation of urgent measures to address water shortages, such as acquiring water tank trucks and drilling wells.
