March Rains Revive Agricultural Hopes in Fez and Moulay Yacoub

Amid promising rainfall, the area under the jurisdiction of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture in Fez recorded 150 mm of rain during March, bringing the annual precipitation average to 310 mm, with a maximum of 358 mm in Moulay Yacoub and 260 mm in the Fez prefecture. These rainfall figures have bolstered positive expectations for autumn crops and fruit trees in the region, according to statements by Mohamed Mzour, the Regional Director of Agriculture in Fez.

Mzour pointed out that these rains will contribute to improving groundwater levels and increasing the filling rates of surrounding dams, particularly the Idriss I Dam, benefiting farmers who rely on wells for their water needs. The rainfall will also play a significant role in enhancing the vegetative cover of pastures and fallow lands over an area of 2,200 hectares, reducing the pressure on livestock breeders by more than 30% in terms of feed costs.

Regarding autumn crops, which cover an area of 72,730 hectares and include cereals and legumes, the Regional Director advised farmers to begin fertilization using ammonium nitrate (33.5%) to accelerate the growth of late-season crops. The recent rains will also encourage the planting of spring crops such as onions, garlic, and chickpeas.

As for fruit trees, particularly olive trees covering 37,000 hectares and rose bushes spanning 1,700 hectares, Mzour confirmed that the rains will help them transition from dormancy to the flowering stage, necessitating urgent agricultural interventions such as weed control and soil aeration around the trees.

The Regional Director also warned livestock breeders to vaccinate their animals against internal parasites and intestinal poisoning, especially given the rapid shift from dry to green feeding patterns after the rains, to protect animal health and maintain livestock productivity.

Overall, the agricultural season in the Fez region looks promising, with farmers and livestock breeders optimistic about the March rainfall, which raises hopes for a successful farming season and abundant production benefiting the entire region.
