In an official statement following the dismantling of the terrorist cell known as “Lions of the Caliphate in the Greater Maghreb,” the Director of Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), Mr. Cherkaoui Habboub, emphasized that this proactive operation demonstrates the high level of preparedness of Moroccan security forces in countering terrorist threats. He credited the success to the strong coordination between various security agencies, particularly the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The security chief explained that the dismantling of this cell followed nearly a year of surveillance and tracking, leading to the arrest of 12 extremist individuals who were planning an imminent terrorist attack. The group was allegedly receiving direct orders from a senior leader within the ISIS organization based in the African Sahel region. Investigations revealed that the cell members intended to target key infrastructure and security headquarters to create chaos and spread fear among citizens.
He further stated that security operations led to the seizure of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, including machine guns, firearms, and ready-to-use explosives. This discovery underscores the severe threat that the cell posed to national stability.
Habboub stressed that Moroccan security agencies continue to operate proactively to prevent terrorist groups from gaining a foothold within the country. He pointed out that this operation took place just weeks after another terrorist plot was thwarted in Had Soualem, highlighting the persistent nature of extremist threats and the ongoing need for intensified security efforts.
Concluding his address, the BCIJ director reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. He also praised the vigilance of Moroccan security forces and the efficiency of intelligence agencies in neutralizing threats, ensuring the protection of the nation and its citizens.
