The Fez branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) announced, in a denunciatory communication, that it had received a request for support from the family of 21-year-old Walid Houeiri, after he set himself on fire in front of the police station in Bensouda on Wednesday, February 13, 2025, at 11:00 pm.
According to the communiqué, the family reported that the young man committed this act due to his “sense of victimization”, as his repeated complaints about being attacked by a certain person were ignored.
The communication indicated that the victim was transferred to the Hassan II University Hospital Complex in Fez, where doctors confirmed the need to transfer him to Casablanca due to the lack of the necessary medical capabilities to deal with his critical health condition, which raised the family’s fears about the worsening of his condition or his death.
In light of this situation, the Fès branch of the association expressed its “deep pain over this tragic incident that affects the right to life,” according to the statement.
The statement also stressed “the need to expedite the transfer of the victim to a hospital that guarantees his hospitalization in good conditions,” considering that “any delay in this procedure may cost the victim’s life.”
In the same context, the association’s branch called for a “detailed investigation into the causes of this incident, to uncover all the circumstances and determine the extent of any failure to deal with the victim’s complaints, with the necessary legal sanctions.”
