Regional Heads of Publishers’ Federation Reject Government Support Decision and Demand Review

The regional heads of the Moroccan Federation of Newspaper Publishers have announced their outright rejection of the new government support decision for the press, calling for its review to ensure pluralism and fairness in the sector. This came during a meeting held by the Federation on Thursday, December 26, 2024, chaired by the Federation’s president and members of its executive office.

The attendees affirmed their full support for the Federation’s previous positions regarding the joint ministerial decision and government decree related to public support for the sector, declaring their involvement in all advocacy and protest initiatives organized by the Federation.

The regional heads considered that the new system of public support would lead to the liquidation of hundreds of press enterprises across various regions of the kingdom, displacing their human resources, and eliminating the diversity and pluralism of the national media landscape. They emphasized that it contradicts the law.

The meeting participants expressed their surprise at the ministry’s talk of allocating special support for regional press, while the support decree explicitly states that regional press is included as part of the national press. They also denounced the ministry’s previous actions to thwart the implementation of partnership agreements between some Federation branches and regional councils.

The regional heads announced their engagement in a national mobilization campaign and the launch of regional protest initiatives, supporting all efforts to confront exclusion by partner professional organizations. They called on the government to show courage and work towards revising its decree, as well as changing the criteria and mechanisms of the joint ministerial decision, with the aim of making the public support system consistent with reality and achieving pluralism, equality, fairness, and justice.

It is worth noting that the Moroccan Federation of Newspaper Publishers had previously expressed its rejection of the joint ministerial decision, considering it exclusionary and leading to the demise of press enterprises. The Federation pointed out that only four companies would acquire one-third of the support amount allocated to the sector, which amounts to 300 million dirhams annually.
