President of Asoul Municipality Imprisoned for Embezzlement of Public Funds

On Wednesday, December 25, 2024, the King’s Attorney General at the Court of Appeal in Ouarzazate issued a decision to imprison Lahcen Aghrouch, the president of Asoul municipality in Tinghir province, in the local prison of Ouarzazate. This decision comes to enforce a final judicial ruling against Aghrouch, sentencing him to six months in prison and a fine of 2,000 dirhams for embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds and movable property under his official custody.

The decision was made after the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal filed by the convicted against the appellate court’s ruling. Following the decision, the Attorney General issued instructions to the regional judicial police in Ouarzazate to take the necessary legal measures to execute the sentence, including hearing the convicted.

This action is part of efforts to combat financial corruption and protect public funds in Morocco. A judicial source confirmed that the judiciary is committed to applying the law strictly and transparently without discrimination, aiming to establish principles of accountability and integrity in public affairs management.

It is worth noting that the Moroccan Penal Code punishes crimes of embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds with penalties ranging from imprisonment to fines, depending on the value of the embezzled or misappropriated funds. These penalties aim to deter public officials from committing such crimes that harm the public interest and undermine trust in institutions.
