During a parliamentary session held on Tuesday, December 24, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Transport, Nizar Baraka, presented a detailed overview of the current state of the nation’s road infrastructure. He highlighted the challenges faced by the ministry and outlined strategies aimed at improving both national and rural road networks.
Minister Baraka emphasized that Morocco’s national road network spans an extensive area valued at over MAD 254 billion. He underlined the critical need for maintaining this vital infrastructure to address climatic changes and increasing road usage. The minister noted that the proportion of roads classified as in “very good” or “good” condition has risen to 64%, up from 60% in previous years. The ministry aims to raise this figure to 67% by 2027.
Addressing regional disparities in road quality, the minister pointed out that regions such as Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab boast road quality exceeding 90%. In contrast, regions like Fes-Meknes lag behind, with only 50.7% of roads in good condition. Baraka stressed the importance of focusing efforts on underperforming areas to enhance equity in infrastructure quality across Morocco.
The minister revealed that approximately 47% of the road infrastructure budget has been allocated for maintenance. However, he acknowledged that this allocation remains insufficient without comprehensive maintenance programs, particularly for rural roads. To address this, the ministry has launched collaborative programs with regional authorities to bolster rural road maintenance, including projects in areas such as Oujda, Berkane, Sidi Ifni, and Smara.
On infrastructure development, Minister Baraka announced the completion of the 1,100-kilometer expressway linking Tiznit and Dakhla, a key component of the southern regions’ development model. Additionally, preliminary studies are underway for extending the Marrakech-Agadir highway to connect with the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway. This extension is expected to cost approximately MAD 6 billion.
Concluding his address, Baraka affirmed that the ministry remains committed to enhancing connectivity between Morocco’s regions, promoting equitable development, and achieving sustainable growth through continuous improvements to road infrastructure.
