UN General Assembly Renews Support for Political Process to Resolve Western Sahara Issue

The United Nations General Assembly, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, approved a resolution reaffirming its support for the political process conducted under the exclusive supervision of the UN Security Council, aimed at resolving the regional dispute over the Western Sahara. This resolution confirms the position previously adopted by the Fourth Committee in October.

The resolution calls on all concerned parties to fully cooperate with the UN Secretary-General in order to reach a political solution to the conflict, based on Security Council resolutions adopted since 2007. It thereby reinforces the political process aimed at achieving a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” to this regional dispute.

The resolution also commended the efforts made in this context, urging all parties to enhance cooperation with the Secretary-General and with each other, with the goal of reaching a political settlement acceptable to all concerned parties.
