Updates on the Paving Project of Al-Mers – Ait Saleh Road

The President of Al-Mers Municipality, Mr. Al-Hussein Idrissi, has provided new updates on the Al-Mers – Ait Saleh road paving project, which has sparked widespread controversy after a video surfaced showing a school transport bus stuck in mud due to project delays and the ongoing difficulties faced by residents in transportation.

Mr. Idrissi stated that he held a meeting on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with the Regional Director of Agriculture, the authority overseeing the project. During the meeting, it was confirmed that the contract file is currently in the General Treasury, undergoing the final legal procedures. The tender is expected to be announced in the coming days, allowing the construction work to commence soon, which may finally ease the hardships caused by the road’s poor condition.

The project is expected to improve mobility in five key villages: Taghit, Ait Youssef Ahadou, Taghzout Sufla, and Ait Saleh. Additionally, it will bring indirect benefits to other villages, such as Irzi, Tinmellalt, and several smaller communities within the Al-Mers Municipality. Given its wide-reaching impact, this project is considered strategically important for the region’s development.

Mr. Idrissi also highlighted that Boulemane Province, covering 34% of the total area of the Fes-Meknes region, suffers from a significant lack of road infrastructure. Many villages remain unconnected to paved roads, making transportation especially difficult during the winter season. While past efforts have improved access in some areas, there is still a pressing need for further projects to address the ongoing infrastructure gap.

The allocated budget for rural roads in Boulemane Province stands at 1.2 billion MAD (120 million USD). However, this amount is considered insufficient, given the vast size of the region and its growing infrastructure needs. The delays in execution have led to widespread frustration among residents, especially students and those relying on school transport. Despite this, officials assure that the contracting process is in its final stages, bringing hope for a resolution to this long-standing issue.
