Sefrou – Local community representatives and residents of the Ain Cheggag commune in Sefrou Province have renewed their call for the competent authorities to urgently address what they describe as the continued delay in providing essential infrastructure. They say that many families have been living for more than 15 years without basic services they consider essential, including electricity and a sewage network, while also facing recurring problems with access to drinking water and the poor condition of certain roads and rural tracks.
According to consistent statements from several residents and local community representatives, the absence of connection to the electricity grid has forced some families to rely on traditional lighting methods. They say this negatively affects their daily lives, particularly for students during the evening hours, while also limiting the use of electrical appliances during the hot summer season.
The speakers added that the area still lacks a wastewater drainage system, forcing many households to rely on traditional septic pits for wastewater disposal. According to their accounts, this has led to unpleasant odors and the spread of insects, raising concerns about possible impacts on public health and the environment.
Local community representatives also reported repeated interruptions in the drinking water supply, particularly during the summer months. They stated that this situation further increases residents’ difficulties, alongside what they described as the deteriorating condition of several roads and access routes, which become even more difficult to use during the winter season.
Regarding development projects, several residents stated that they had received promises over the years that projects aimed at strengthening basic infrastructure would be launched. However, they say they have not seen any tangible progress on the ground to date. Some residents also questioned the fate of financial allocations that they claim had previously been earmarked for wastewater infrastructure projects, calling for clarification regarding their use.
With regard to electricity connections, several residents explained that one of the main obstacles they face is the requirement to complete certain administrative documents, including an occupancy permit, in order to obtain access to the electricity network. They consider this requirement a major barrier preventing them from regularizing their situation.
Local community representatives and residents of Ain Cheggag called on the provincial authorities and the relevant government departments to open a dialogue with residents and accelerate the implementation of projects related to drinking water, electricity, wastewater infrastructure, and road rehabilitation in order to improve living conditions and respond to the concerns expressed by the local population.
