2030 World Cup: Spanish Political Parties Use Ceuta Crisis to Call for Morocco’s Exclusion from Joint Hosting Bid

Rabat – The hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup has once again become a topic of political debate in Spain after several opposition parties used the recent migration crisis in Ceuta to renew calls for Morocco to be excluded from the joint hosting project. Observers say the move is driven more by Spain’s domestic political debate than by the official World Cup bidding process.

In the Spanish Parliament, the right-wing Vox party, along with Sumar and Podemos, introduced political initiatives calling for a review of Morocco’s participation in the joint 2030 World Cup bid, citing the consequences of the recent migration crisis in Ceuta.

According to Vox, the events in Ceuta raise questions about Morocco’s ability to ensure the security of a global sporting event as significant as the FIFA World Cup. The party also urged the Spanish government to oppose any proposal that would allow Morocco to host the tournament’s final match.

Meanwhile, left-wing parties focused their criticism on issues related to human rights and what they described as “sportswashing,” questioning the continued partnership between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal in hosting the 2030 tournament.

Despite these political initiatives, the proposals submitted to the Spanish Parliament carry no legally binding effect. They are considered political positions and parliamentary oversight measures that have no direct impact on the official World Cup hosting process.

The joint bid by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal has already received official approval from FIFA, which endorsed the project. Preparations continue according to the agreed schedule, and no review or modification of the hosting plan has been announced.

Observers believe the controversy reflects the continued use of bilateral issues in Spain’s domestic political debate, while decisions regarding the organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup remain exclusively within FIFA’s authority rather than the political positions expressed in the Spanish Parliament.
