A new development has emerged in the U.S. legislative proposal seeking to designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization, after Republican Congressman Tim Moore joined the list of supporters of the initiative, becoming the thirteenth lawmaker to back the bill.
Tim Moore is considered one of the leading Republican figures in the state of North Carolina, having served as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives for ten years between 2015 and 2025 before moving to the U.S. Congress as representative of the state’s 14th congressional district.
The proposed legislation, known as the “Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act,” seeks to push the U.S. administration toward examining the formal designation of the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization. The initiative is based on allegations of ties and cooperation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including activities linked to drones and intelligence and military coordination in the Sahel and North Africa region.
The bill was initially introduced by Republican Congressman Joe Wilson on June 24, 2025, with the initial backing of six lawmakers, before attracting additional Republican support in recent months.
The debate has also moved to the United States Senate, where Senators Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, and Rick Scott introduced a similar proposal last March, later joined by Senator David McCormick.
The proposed legislation includes stricter measures, such as financial sanctions, asset freezes, and travel restrictions, should any cooperation between the front and Iran be proven.
During a hearing at the United States Senate on counterterrorism efforts in Africa, Senator Ted Cruz raised concerns regarding possible links between the Polisario Front and Iran-linked organizations, including Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
For her part, Monica Jacobson, an official at the U.S. State Department’s Office of Counterterrorism, stated that Washington is closely monitoring movements linked to the Polisario Front in the Sahel region, noting that the area has witnessed smuggling activities and armed movements that could be exploited by external actors.
She added that the United States Department of State and intelligence agencies are jointly following these developments while preparing a broader security briefing on the matter.
This development comes amid increasing political activity within the United States related to regional security issues in North Africa and the Sahel, as Morocco and the international community closely monitor the potential implications of any future decision concerning the classification of the Polisario Front.
