Taza – The Court of Appeal in Taza upheld on Tuesday the initial ruling issued against Moroccan rapper Sohaib El Kabbli, artistically known as “Al Hasil,” sentencing him to eight months in prison following charges related to “insulting an organized body” and “undermining the respect owed to constitutional institutions.”
According to case details, the 23-year-old appeared before the appeals court during a hearing that attracted significant public attention. His defense team stated that he was merely expressing his opinions through his artistic works and social media posts, denying any intention to insult individuals or institutions.
Speaking to media outlets, his lawyer, Mohamed Tayfi, argued that the ruling involved what he described as “an error in assessment,” adding that the case file does not contain explicit expressions amounting to direct insult or offense.
The initial ruling had been issued on March 27, sentencing the rapper to eight months in prison over songs and online posts addressing social and political issues, including normalization, education, healthcare, and corruption, according to the defense team.
The case also sparked reactions from rights groups and political actors after Al Adl Wal Ihsane — which the defendant is reportedly affiliated with — called for his release, describing the prosecution as “an attack on freedom of expression.” A similar position had previously been expressed by the Moroccan Association for Human Rights in earlier statements.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that the public prosecutor requested a harsher sentence during the appeal hearing.
The case continues to fuel debate over the limits of freedom of expression and artistic production in Morocco, particularly amid a growing number of legal cases linked to content published on digital platforms and social media.
