This announcement was made in an official statement by Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, following his meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. He confirmed that this decision came “after an in-depth analysis of this important issue that has an impact on sub-regional peace and security.”

The Malian government affirmed that this new orientation is part of a comprehensive review of its position on the conflict, indicating that the decision was officially adopted and will be communicated to regional and international organizations, as well as to accredited diplomatic missions in the country.

In the same context, Mali expressed its explicit support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco, considering it “the only serious and realistic basis” for reaching a lasting solution to this regional conflict. It emphasized that granting autonomy to the southern provinces under Moroccan sovereignty represents “the most realistic option.”

Il a souligné que l’octroi d’une autonomie aux provinces du Sud sous souveraineté marocaine constitue « l’option la plus réaliste ».
Bamako also reiterated its support for the United Nations process, including the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, as well as the relevant Security Council resolutions, notably Resolution No. 2797 adopted in 2025.
