Le Maroc a été élu à l’unanimité, vendredi à La Haye aux Pays-Bas, à la présidence du Conseil exécutif de l’Organisation pour l’interdiction des armes chimiques (OIAC), au nom du groupe africain, pour un mandat d’un an à partir du 12 mai prochain.
Morocco was unanimously elected on Friday in The Hague, Netherlands, to the presidency of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), on behalf of the African Group, for a one-year term starting on May 12.

Le Royaume a été élu en la personne de Mohammed Basri, ambassadeur du Maroc aux Pays-Bas et représentant permanent du Royaume auprès de l’organisation, après un soutien collectif des pays africains parties à la Convention sur l’interdiction des armes chimiques, ainsi que l’appui des autres États membres du Conseil exécutif.
The Kingdom was elected through Mohammed Basri, Morocco’s ambassador to the Netherlands and permanent representative of the Kingdom to the organization, following collective support from African states party to the Chemical Weapons Convention, as well as backing from other members of the Executive Council.

La présidence par le Maroc de cet organe central de décision au sein de l’organisation constitue une reconnaissance de l’engagement continu du Royaume en faveur des objectifs de la Convention sur l’interdiction des armes chimiques. Elle reflète également la dynamique constante de coopération entre le Maroc et l’organisation internationale dans les domaines de la sécurité chimique et de la promotion des usages pacifiques de la chimie.
Morocco’s leadership of this central decision-making body within the organization reflects recognition of the Kingdom’s continued commitment to the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention. It also highlights the ongoing cooperation between Morocco and the international organization in the fields of chemical safety and the promotion of peaceful uses of chemistry.

Dans ce cadre, le Maroc a accueilli ces dernières années plusieurs conférences et formations régionales au profit d’experts et de cadres de pays africains, portant notamment sur la sécurité chimique, le renforcement des capacités des premiers intervenants, ainsi que la lutte contre le terrorisme chimique et l’application des lois relatives aux substances chimiques.
In this context, Morocco has hosted several regional conferences and training sessions in recent years for experts and officials from African countries, focusing on topics such as chemical security, strengthening the capacities of first responders, combating chemical terrorism, and enforcing laws related to chemical substances.

Cette élection reflète également l’appréciation des États membres de l’Organisation pour l’interdiction des armes chimiques pour le rôle joué par le Maroc au sein des différentes structures de l’organisation et sa contribution au renforcement des efforts internationaux visant à consolider le système mondial d’interdiction des armes chimiques.
This election also reflects the appreciation of OPCW member states for Morocco’s role within the organization’s various bodies and its contribution to strengthening international efforts aimed at reinforcing the global system banning chemical weapons.

Il convient de rappeler qu’il s’agit de la deuxième fois que le Maroc assure la présidence du Conseil exécutif de l’organisation, après un précédent mandat durant la période 2021-2022. Le Royaume a également occupé plusieurs postes au sein de l’organisation, notamment la présidence de la Conférence des États parties — l’organe suprême de l’organisation — entre 2017 et 2018, ainsi que le poste de vice-président du Conseil exécutif au nom du groupe africain pour la période 2025-2026 et celui de vice-président de la Conférence des États parties durant les périodes 2023-2024 et 2025-2026.
It is worth noting that this is the second time Morocco has assumed the presidency of the organization’s Executive Council, following a previous term during 2021-2022. The Kingdom has also held several positions within the organization, including the presidency of the Conference of States Parties — the organization’s highest body — between 2017 and 2018, as well as Vice-President of the Executive Council on behalf of the African Group for the 2025-2026 period and Vice-President of the Conference of States Parties during the 2023-2024 and 2025-2026 periods.

L’Organisation pour l’interdiction des armes chimiques, chargée de mettre en œuvre la Convention sur l’interdiction des armes chimiques, compte 193 États membres et supervise les efforts de la communauté internationale visant à éliminer définitivement ce type d’armes. Depuis l’entrée en vigueur de la convention en 1997, plus de 100 % des stocks déclarés d’armes chimiques ont été détruits sous la supervision de l’organisation.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, responsible for implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, includes 193 member states and oversees international efforts to permanently eliminate this type of weapon. Since the convention entered into force in 1997, more than 100 percent of declared chemical weapons stockpiles have been destroyed under the organization’s supervision.

L’organisation a également reçu le prix Nobel de la paix en 2013 en reconnaissance de ses efforts pour éliminer les armes chimiques. Il convient de rappeler que le Maroc a signé la Convention sur l’interdiction des armes chimiques en 1993 et l’a ratifiée en 1995, réaffirmant depuis son engagement total en faveur de ses dispositions et de l’utilisation pacifique de la chimie.
The organization was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 in recognition of its efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. Morocco signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993 and ratified it in 1995, reaffirming its full commitment to the treaty and to the peaceful use of chemistry.
