A state of heightened security preparedness and anticipation prevails in Taounate Province as a large-scale protest approaches. The demonstration, called for by activists and civil society organizations, aims to denounce what they describe as the “catastrophic” state of health and medical facilities in the province. Fes News has learned that local authorities and Royal Gendarmerie forces have increased their presence at key points and main entrances of Taounate city in preparation for any developments that might threaten the peaceful nature of the protest.
These protest calls, which have widely circulated on social media platforms, stem from growing popular dissatisfaction and anger over the declining quality of health services. Protesters demand urgent intervention by the Ministry of Health to end the residents’ suffering, manifested by a severe shortage of specialized medical staff and nurses, as well as the lack of essential medical equipment and supplies in the regional hospital and health centers across the communes. Residents also condemn the long waiting times for medical appointments and the difficulty accessing treatment, forcing many patients to travel long distances to Fez hospitals to receive basic health services.
Local sources report that the security alert aims to protect public and private property and ensure that the protest remains peaceful amid concerns over possible escalation. It is worth noting that similar protests have taken place in recent weeks outside the regional hospital, where citizens defied ban orders to voice their demands.
These escalating protest movements reflect a deep sense of marginalization among the people of Taounate Province, who assert their constitutional right to adequate health services and call for the implementation of spatial justice through the provision of health infrastructure that meets the growing needs of the population.
