Red Cross to CNN: No Access to Hostages in Gaza Without Ceasefire and Security Guarantees

Cairo – FesNews: A spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) revealed in exclusive statements to CNN the impossibility of the organization’s teams reaching the Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip without achieving a ceasefire, confirming that the current security conditions in the Strip do not allow its humanitarian staff to operate.

These statements came in response to a request by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called on the Red Cross to visit the hostages and provide them with medical assistance.

Urgent Conditions for Humanitarian Work

The ICRC spokesperson clarified three fundamental points governing the organization’s ability to operate in Gaza:

  1. Ceasefire Condition for Hostage Access: “We cannot access the Israeli hostages in Gaza without a ceasefire,” indicating that continued fighting prevents the execution of any humanitarian tasks related to the hostages or others.
  2. Security Conditions Hinder Entry: He stressed that “our staff cannot visit the Gaza Strip as long as security conditions remain extremely difficult,” explaining that the safety of relief teams is a top priority, and the current situation does not provide the minimum level of security for their movement.
  3. Need for Operational Space and Guarantees: The spokesperson noted that “addressing the worsening humanitarian situation in #Gaza urgently requires space to operate and guarantees for humanitarian aid workers.” He affirmed that providing a safe and stable environment is the only way to enable humanitarian organizations to deliver life-saving assistance to millions of affected civilians, including the hostages.

Reaffirmation of Humanitarian Principles

The ICRC’s statements serve to reaffirm the principles of international humanitarian work, which require providing safe conditions and unimpeded access for aid to those in need during conflicts. The international organization also places the ball in the court of the involved parties, calling for a halt to the fighting and guarantees for the protection of humanitarian workers as an indispensable step to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and to create any opportunity for communication with the hostages and provide them with assistance.
