Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced a seven-day national mourning period following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at the age of 82.
In an official statement posted on the social media platform X, President Tinubu ordered flags across the country to be flown at half-mast during the mourning period, describing Buhari as “our esteemed former leader.”
Tinubu praised Buhari as a “patriot, soldier, and statesman of the highest caliber,” highlighting his dedicated service to Nigeria both as a military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
He recalled Buhari’s legacy in championing administrative discipline and fighting corruption, describing his leadership as “strong, honest, and rooted in a deep belief in Nigeria’s future.”
As a symbolic gesture, President Tinubu has tasked his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, with traveling to the United Kingdom to oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s body ahead of a state funeral befitting his stature.
