Arab Parliament Concludes Its Fifth General Session in Cairo, Elects Saad Al-Otaibi as First Deputy Speaker

The Arab Parliament concluded today, Saturday, the fifth and final general session of the first legislative term of its fourth chapter, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo.

The session addressed numerous important issues related to current developments in the Arab arena, notably the latest updates on the situation in the Palestinian territories, as well as political, economic, social, legal, and human rights matters across the Arab world. The session also discussed an Arab vision to enhance parliamentary and preventive diplomacy.

Additionally, discussions covered the latest preparations for a conference to support the blue economy in the Arab region, a draft law to combat illegal immigration, a guiding document on empowering social entrepreneurship and family businesses, and a vision to develop e-learning in the Arab world. The session also included the establishment of the Arab Women Parliamentarians Forum and the Arab Young Parliamentarians Forum.

The session was chaired by the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Mohamed bin Ahmed Al-Yamahi, during which reports from several permanent committees were presented and discussed, including the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Political and National Security Affairs; the Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs; the Committee on Legislative, Legal Affairs and Human Rights; the Committee on Social, Educational, Cultural, Women and Youth Affairs; and the Palestine Committee.

In the course of the session, Saad Al-Otaibi from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was elected unopposed as the First Deputy Speaker of the Arab Parliament.

The session’s activities had commenced on Thursday with meetings of the four permanent committees of the Arab Parliament, alongside the Palestine Committee and various subcommittees, to discuss the topics presented to the general session and to review the latest developments at both the Arab and regional levels.

Furthermore, on Friday, a delegation from the Arab Parliament, led by Speaker Mohamed bin Ahmed Al-Yamahi, visited the city of Arish and the Rafah crossing to monitor the humanitarian situation and field support efforts for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Representing the Kingdom of Morocco at the session were members of the Moroccan parliamentary delegation to the Arab Parliament: Parliamentary Counselor Mohamed El Bakouri, Chair of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee; MP Khadija Hajoubi, Vice-Chair of the Social, Educational, Cultural, Women and Youth Affairs Committee; MP Mohamed Lahmouch, member of the Foreign Affairs, Political and National Security Committee; and MP Mohamed Ayach, member of the Legislative, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee.
