US Aircraft Carrier Nimitz Heads to the Middle East Amid Rising Israel-Iran Tensions

Sources report that the US aircraft carrier Nimitz, previously cruising in the South China Sea, changed course on Monday heading west toward the Middle East amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. This information was provided by Marine Traffic, a platform that tracks ship positions worldwide in real time.

Current Route of the Carrier

The Nimitz is currently transiting the Strait of Malacca, located between Indonesia’s Sumatra island and Malaysia, en route to the Middle East. A planned reception aboard the Nimitz on Friday, June 20, during a scheduled four-day visit to Da Nang in central Vietnam, was canceled. A Vietnamese government official confirmed the cancellation to AFP, citing a letter from the US embassy that mentioned an “emerging operational need” from the US Department of Defense as the reason.

US Air Movements in Europe

Meanwhile, flight-tracking websites monitoring global air traffic identified the movement of about thirty US refueling aircraft departing the United States overnight Sunday to Monday, heading toward various military bases across Europe.

The Pentagon declined to comment immediately on these developments.

Background of the Military Escalation

This US military repositioning follows Israel’s unprecedented massive air campaign launched on Friday against Iran, targeting hundreds of military and nuclear sites to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran has responded with missile barrages against Israeli territory.

This marks the first time in decades of proxy wars and limited operations that the two adversaries are engaged in direct military confrontation of such intensity.

US Position

US President Donald Trump stated from Washington on Sunday that US involvement in the conflict is “possible,” but that the US is “not involved at this time.” He added that the United States is “helping” Israel intercept Iranian missiles targeting its territory.

These developments highlight a serious escalation in regional tensions, with clear US military movements supporting its ally Israel amid the growing Iranian threat.
