Omar Hilale, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations in New York

Hilale Elected Chair of UN High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation

United Nations – Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, was elected by acclamation as the Chair of the 22nd session of the High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation of the United Nations General Assembly for a two-year term.

In a statement on this occasion, Mr. Hilale affirmed that this election reflects the Kingdom of Morocco’s leading role in the field of South-South cooperation, which King Mohammed VI has placed at the heart of the Kingdom’s foreign policy. He added that the royal vision aims to consolidate this cooperation on the foundations of solidarity, shared and sustainable development, and humanity, and to encourage investment in vital areas such as education, health, agriculture, vocational training, food security, and combating the effects of climate change.

The High-Level Committee, a strategic body of the United Nations General Assembly, is the sole UN platform dedicated to assessing progress made in South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation at the global and intergovernmental levels. It aims to support the efforts of developing countries to implement the 2030 Agenda through sustainable and solidarity-based development projects.

Morocco’s election to chair this committee comes at a critical juncture marked by a decline in multilateral action and development funding falling to its lowest levels in decades, necessitating a rethinking of international cooperation mechanisms. In this context, South-South cooperation emerges as a strategic lever for sustainable development.
