According to local sources in the Taounate region, the Rutba area witnessed a tragic accident last weekend, where eight schoolgirls fell out of a school transportation vehicle, requiring them to be taken to the emergency department.
The accident occurred while the students were traveling to a number of neighboring villages, such as Douar al-Mukamal, Douar Tamsnit and Dar Takouk, as the car was traveling at high speed on an unpaved and bumpy road, and the overcrowding inside the car and the opening of the back door contributed to the tragic accident.
According to local sources, some of the students fell out of the car, while one of them was hit by a truck while trying to help her classmates, resulting in serious injuries.
According to the same sources, most of the injured were transported to Ghafsay hospital, while another student in critical condition was taken to the University Hospital in Fez for treatment.
Local authorities and the gendarmerie launched investigations, while local residents expressed their great dissatisfaction with the negligence that accompanies school transportation services, considering that the accident was the result of officials’ laxity in taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of female students.
For her part, collective councillor Asmaa Mouilde pointed out, in statements to local sources, that she had previously submitted an official request to the head of the Rutba community and the commander of Wadka Command to install speed reducers in several black spots within the Mekmel roundabout, which witnessed serious traffic accidents in the past, but her requests did not receive any response.
