The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Israeli forces killed two Palestinian women on Sunday in the occupied West Bank, one of whom was eight months pregnant. The Israeli army claimed it had “targeted terrorists” in the area.
According to the ministry, Soundus Jamal Mohammad Chalabi, 23, was killed before dawn in the Nur Shams refugee camp, while her husband, Yazan Abou Chola, was seriously injured. The ministry stated that the young woman died upon arrival at the local hospital, adding that medical teams were unable to save the baby’s life due to the Israeli army preventing the transfer of the wounded to the hospital.
Murad Alyan, a member of the camp’s popular committee, told AFP that the couple “was trying to leave the camp before the occupation forces entered. They were shot in their car, resulting in the martyrdom of the woman and her baby, while the husband was injured.”
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as “an execution crime committed by the occupation forces,” accusing them of “deliberately targeting defenseless civilians.”
In a separate incident, the Ministry of Health reported that Rahaf Fouad Abdoullah Al-Ashqar, 21, was killed in the camp. A source from the camp’s popular committee stated that she was killed and her father wounded when “Israeli forces used explosives to open the door of their family home.”
The Israeli army told AFP that it was investigating these allegations. It stated that it had launched an operation in the Nur Shams camp on Sunday morning as part of a broader ongoing operation in the neighboring camps of Tulkarem and Jenin.
“The Ephraim Brigade combat team began operations in Nur Shams,” the army said in a statement, adding that soldiers had “targeted several terrorists and arrested other individuals in the area.”
AFP footage showed military bulldozers clearing debris in front of seemingly empty buildings in the densely populated camp, which houses approximately 13,000 people.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 70 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, since the beginning of the year. Violence has escalated significantly since the start of the war on Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The ministry reported that at least 886 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army or settlers over the past 16 months. Meanwhile, at least 32 Israelis, including soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations, according to official Israeli figures.
