Trump appoints Richard Grenell (architect of US recognition of Moroccan Sahara) as special envoy

President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Richard Grenell, his longtime foreign policy advisor, as a presidential envoy for special missions. Grenell, who previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany and acting Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term, will now assist the incoming administration in addressing some of the most challenging foreign policy issues globally, including hotspots like Venezuela and North Korea.

Grenell’s diplomatic career has been marked by significant roles, including serving as the special presidential envoy for peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo. He was also instrumental in securing U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, a key achievement that aligned with Trump’s broader Middle East peace initiatives under the Abraham Accords. Additionally, Grenell had advocated for removing the Western Sahara issue from the United Nations Fourth Committee to close the file permanently.

Despite being considered for the position of Secretary of State, Trump ultimately chose Florida Senator Marco Rubio for that role. However, Grenell’s new appointment reflects his close alignment with Trump’s foreign policy vision and his reputation as a staunch loyalist and effective negotiator.
