Raja Continues to Struggle in CAF Champions League with Loss to Sundowns

Raja Athletic Club suffered another defeat in their CAF Champions League campaign, falling to their South African hosts Mamelodi Sundowns by a single goal, in the match that brought the two teams together on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, as part of the third round of the group stage.

The only goal of the match came through striker Iqraam Rayners in the 65th minute, giving his team Sundowns a valuable victory in a game that saw relative dominance from the hosts. This loss marks Raja’s third consecutive match without a win in the continental tournament, having previously lost to AS FAR by two clean goals and drawn with Maniema Union of Congo with a goal each.

With this result, the Green Team remains at the bottom of their group with only one point, while Sundowns climbed to second place with 5 points, equal with AS FAR, the leaders who are ahead on goal difference.

This defeat puts the Casablanca team in a very critical position, as they are now required to achieve positive results in the remaining matches if they want to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the next round. Raja faces a significant challenge to regain their balance and improve their performance under increasing pressure on the team and the coaching staff led by new coach Miguel Cardoso, who is seeking to return the team to winning ways.
