The opposition forces that seized power in Damascus have announced the appointment of Mohammed Al-Bashir as the head of the transitional government in Syria, according to an official statement broadcast on Syrian television. Al-Bashir will assume his duties until March 1, 2025.
Prior to his new appointment, Al-Bashir held the position of head of the “Salvation Government” in the opposition stronghold of Idlib in northwestern Syria. In his statement, he declared, “The general leadership has tasked us with managing the transitional government until March 1.”
A source from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the powerful Islamist group leading the opposition coalition that seized power, explained that Al-Bashir will head “a government responsible for managing daily affairs” until the start of the constitutional process, after which a new government will be formed.
This development comes after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which ruled Syria for more than five decades. Assad fled the country on Sunday following a surprise attack by opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, ending 13 years of civil war.
Following Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s entry into Damascus, its leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani met with former Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali on Monday to “coordinate the transfer of power,” after the parliament and the formerly ruling Baath Party announced their support for the transitional phase.
The new government faces significant challenges in unifying the country, rebuilding institutions, and achieving justice for victims, while maintaining stability and avoiding slipping back into a spiral of violence. The international community is also watching the transitional government’s steps to ensure an inclusive political process and the reconstruction of Syria after years of devastating conflict.
