The city of Dakar, Senegal, witnessed unfortunate events following the conclusion of a football match between USM Alger and ASC Jaraaf on Sunday, December 8, 2024, as part of the second round of the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite the match ending in a goalless draw, the atmosphere turned chaotic in the stands and on the pitch after the final whistle. According to Senegalese media, clashes erupted between Algerian supporters and security forces, before Senegalese fans joined in. Reports also indicated that some members of the Algerian club and players were involved in these incidents.
Numerous videos circulated on social media documenting moments of violence between supporters. Images also emerged showing injuries sustained by some USM Alger players. Additionally, photos of the locker rooms at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Dakar were shared, revealing significant damage, including a smashed television, though the authenticity of these images has not been confirmed.
These events resulted in injuries to players and supporters, as well as damage to stadium facilities. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a statement hours after these regrettable incidents, confirming the opening of an investigation into the matter and referring the case to the relevant authorities for further inquiry.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time USM Alger supporters have been involved in violent scenes. In June of the previous year, a match between USM Alger and CS Constantine witnessed similar violent events at the end of the game, where the stands of Hamlaoui Stadium turned into a battleground between supporters of both teams and security forces.
