Guterres Calls for De-escalation in the Middle East Amid Rising Tensions

In a dramatic turn of events in the Middle East, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to what he described as a “horrific cycle of escalation” in the region. This came during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, attended by representatives from Israel, Lebanon, and Iran.

Guterres strongly condemned the recent Iranian missile attacks on Israel, emphasizing that “the time has come to stop this cycle that is leading the peoples of the Middle East to the abyss.” He stressed the need to halt “the deadly cycle of reciprocal violence.”

For his part, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, vowed a “decisive and painful response” to the Iranian attack, affirming that Israel would act in accordance with international law. In contrast, Iranian ambassador Amir Iravani stated that “Israel only understands the language of force,” considering Iran’s response necessary to restore the balance of power.

In a significant development, US President Joe Biden announced his country’s opposition to Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Amidst these tensions, Israel declared Guterres a “persona non grata” on its territory, accusing him of failing to condemn Iran by name after its recent attack.

This escalation comes at a time when the war in Gaza continues, and confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah persist on the Lebanese border. Israel recently announced the start of a ground offensive into Lebanon targeting Hezbollah.

As these rapid developments continue, the international community remains on high alert, hoping for a de-escalation of the situation and the avoidance of a wider escalation in the region.
