Al-Masirah TV, affiliated with the Houthi rebels, reported that the Israeli army carried out airstrikes on Sunday targeting ports and power plants in Hodeida, western Yemen, which is under Houthi control.
The Houthis, allies of Iran like Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas, have opened a front against Israel in “solidarity” with the Palestinians in Gaza. On Saturday, they claimed to have launched a missile at Tel Aviv airport.
“A new Israeli aggression targeted the port of Hodeida city and the port of Ras Issa in the same province, as well as two power plants,” Al-Masirah reported.
The Israeli army stated that “during a large-scale aerial operation, dozens of aircraft from the air force (…) attacked military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the Ras Issa and Hodeida regions.”
The power plants and a maritime port that were targeted were “used by the Houthis to transfer Iranian weapons in the region and supplies for military needs,” Israeli army spokesperson David Avraham said in a statement to AFP.
The strike was carried out in response to the recent attacks by the Houthi regime against the State of Israel, he added.
On Saturday, the Houthis stated that the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israel would “strengthen their determination” to attack Israel.
The rebels have launched several attacks on Israel since the start of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which was triggered by Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In July, they carried out a drone attack on Tel Aviv that killed a civilian.
In retaliation, Israel launched strikes on a power plant and fuel depots in the port of Hodeida.
The Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen, are part of what Iran, Israel’s sworn enemy, calls the “axis of resistance,” which includes Hamas and Hezbollah.
They also regularly attack ships linked to Israel, the United States, or the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The United States has carried out raids on Houthi targets in Yemen, sometimes with the help of the British army.
