Morocco Celebrates 45th Anniversary of Wadi al-Dhahab Region Recovery

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the Moroccan people prepare to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the recovery of the Wadi al-Dhahab region, amid an atmosphere of national enthusiasm and comprehensive mobilization. This occasion is considered an important milestone in the journey of completing national independence and achieving the territorial unity of the kingdom.

In a statement, the High Commission for Former Resistance Fighters and Members of the Liberation Army indicated that on August 14, 1979, delegations of scholars, notables, and dignitaries from the Wadi al-Dhahab region came to Rabat to renew their allegiance to the late King Hassan II, affirming their adherence to their Moroccan identity and national belonging.

This event marked a historic moment in the kingdom’s territorial unity march, where the late King distributed weapons to the delegations in a symbolic gesture of continuing the struggle to defend the country’s unity.

Since the region’s recovery, the area has witnessed the launch of major development projects in various fields, contributing to its transformation into an important regional hub. In 2016, King Mohammed VI launched the new development model for the southern provinces, which focuses on integrated development in its economic, social, cultural, and environmental dimensions.

This anniversary comes this year in a special context, as the kingdom recently witnessed a prominent diplomatic victory after France’s recognition of the Moroccan Sahara. The High Commission has prepared a rich program of activities and events to commemorate this occasion, including a speech festival and honoring former resistance fighters, in addition to cultural and educational activities throughout the kingdom.

The family of resistance and liberation army members affirms their renewed loyalty to the Alaouite throne and their readiness to defend the cause of territorial unity, which is considered a top national priority for the Kingdom of Morocco.
