FIFA has revealed the official map of candidate cities to host matches for the 2030 World Cup, which will be held for the first time in history across three countries: Spain, Morocco, and Portugal.
According to the map published in the official bid book, the matches will be distributed across 17 cities in the three countries as follows:
- Spain: 8 cities, namely Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Málaga, San Sebastián, Zaragoza, Seville, and A Coruña.
- Morocco: 6 cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir.
- Portugal: 3 cities, which are Lisbon, Porto, and Faro (in the Algarve region).
The map showcases the geographical diversity of the host cities, stretching from the Atlantic coast in Portugal and northern Spain, to the Mediterranean in eastern Spain, and reaching North Africa in Morocco.
This distribution reflects the unique nature of this World Cup edition, which will bring together the continents of Europe and Africa, offering a diverse experience for both fans and players alike.
It’s worth noting that this plan is subject to final approval by FIFA, and the selected cities are expected to see significant investments in infrastructure and sports facilities in preparation for this major global event.
The wide spread of host cities across three countries and two continents represents a new approach to hosting the World Cup, potentially setting a precedent for future tournaments and emphasizing international cooperation in sports.
