Government spokesman Mustafa Paytas preferred to remain silent yesterday, Thursday, regarding the “truncated map crisis” that resurfaced in the context of relations between Morocco and Israel.
This step comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu uploaded a map of Morocco during an interview with a French channel, in which Morocco appeared to be cut off from its desert lands.
Paytas did not provide any response to a question posed by journalists about the future of diplomatic relations between the two countries, or the Moroccan government’s official position on Netanyahu’s behavior.
It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that truncated maps of Morocco have appeared in the context of relations with Israel, as a similar map had previously appeared in Netanyahu’s office during his meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, last October.
Despite Israel’s attempts to contain the crisis, by affirming its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory and correcting official maps, the “truncated map crisis” raises questions about the seriousness of relations between the two countries, and the extent of Israel’s commitment to respecting Morocco’s territorial integrity.
