A series of suicides have rocked the Tounat region over the past week, with four people dying by hanging or by other means in different parts of the region.
The situation has alarmed civil society, prompting them to raise alarms and demand the need for a regional debate to strengthen the health sector, especially mental health.
The first case of suicide was on Sunday, May 26, when the body of a man named “S.A.” from the Welad al-Taher roundabout in the Mazraoua community was found hanging from a rope tied to a tree.
On Tuesday, the region witnessed two other suicides, as a sixty-year-old man from the Hajar Qalal Beni roundabout in Beni Walid was found dead in the morning, while a twenty-year-old man from the Oulad Azm roundabout in Bouadel was found dead in the evening, according to local sources, the young man was suffering from complications of mental illness.
On the morning of Sunday, June 2, a new suicide case was recorded in the Nouahi Tamdet roundabout in Taounat, where a 40-year-old man suffering from mental illness died after his family went to harvest in the morning.
These successive suicides triggered a wave of grief and anger among the public opinion and many associations, with some considering that the regions of Taounate and El Chaoun have become a hotbed of suicide.
This situation prompted civic actors to organize a regional debate at the Tahr al-Souk Youth House on June 1 to discuss ways to improve the health sector in the city. The debate focused on the importance of paying attention to mental and psychological health in the Taounate region, especially in light of the increasing number of suicides and the increasing cost of treating mental illnesses.
Participants in the debate expressed their fear of a worsening mental health crisis in the region, especially in light of the lack of sufficient treatment centers and the shortage of psychiatrists, and called for the need to allocate a larger budget for mental health and organize awareness campaigns to educate the community about the importance of mental health and how to deal with mental illnesses.
The debate also raised questions about the role of the family and society in preventing suicides, and the need for everyone to work together to provide psychological support to people suffering from mental health issues.
The recent spate of suicides in the Tawunet region is an alarm bell that warns of a serious mental health crisis that requires urgent treatment.
