On Wednesday, the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip announced the exhumation of 49 bodies from a new mass grave discovered in Al-Shifa Hospital, the main hospital complex in the Palestinian territories.
The Hamas government press office said: “A third mass grave was found inside the Al-Shifa Hospital complex.” 49 bodies have been recovered so far.”
In front of the ruins of the hospital that was destroyed by the fighting between the Israeli occupation army and Hamas, an Agence France-Presse journalist was able to see about ten body bags, under the feet of rescuers from the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, which has been ruled by Hamas since then. 2007.
Moatasem Salah, director of the hospital’s emergency department, told AFP that “some of the bodies were decomposed.”
At the end of April, the Palestinian authorities indicated that about thirty bodies had been recovered from two mass graves in Al-Shifa Hospital, which witnessed two weeks of Israeli military operations in the period from mid-March and early April.
Hospitals in the Gaza Strip have been severely targeted since the start of the Israeli military operation in the Palestinian territories, following the bloody attack in southern Israel on October 7 by Hamas fighters from Gaza.
The Israeli army accuses Hamas of using hospitals for military purposes, which the Palestinian movement denies. Last April, the World Health Organization indicated that Al-Shifa Hospital was nothing more than an “empty shell” filled with human remains.
So far, 520 bodies have been recovered from “seven mass graves” discovered in three different hospitals in the Gaza Strip since April.
The attack carried out by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,170 people, most of them civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse report based on official Israeli data. Hamas took about 250 people hostage. Israel estimates that 128 remain in the Gaza Strip, of whom 36 are considered dead.
In response, Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip that has so far killed 34,844 people, most of them civilians, according to the Hamas health ministry.
