The Appeals Court in Agadir today, Tuesday, increased the sentence that had been handed down by the trial court against activist Rida Tajjani from two years to four years in prison.
This ruling comes after a complaint was filed against him by Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi.
In February, the trial court had sentenced Tajjani to two years in prison and a fine of 20,000 dirhams, as well as symbolic compensation of one dirham to Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi.
This ruling came after the Minister of Justice filed a complaint against Tajjani, accusing him of defamation through the broadcast of video clips related to the “Escobar of the Sahara” case.
Commenting on this decision, Radwan Arabi, Tajjani’s lawyer, considered it “a step in the right direction, but unfair and very harsh,” adding that “it appears that we will also challenge the appeal ruling before the Court of Cassation, which is a matter that we will review with Mr. Tajjani.”
