The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations warned, in a recent report released on February 5, 2026, of the continued threat posed by desert locusts to Morocco, confirming the arrival of mature locust groups in the Tan-Tan area, alongside indicators of accelerated breeding in parts of the Moroccan Sahara.
L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture a mis en garde, dans un rapport récent publié le 5 février 2026, contre la persistance de la menace du criquet pèlerin au Maroc, confirmant l’arrivée de groupes adultes dans la région de Tan-Tan, parallèlement à des indicateurs faisant état d’une accélération des processus de reproduction dans certaines zones du Sahara marocain.

The UN report explained that the current locust distribution map in the region is divided into two main fronts. The first, southern front extends between northern Senegal and southern Mauritania, where a relative decline in immature locust numbers and small swarms has been recorded, despite the continued presence of immature adult groups.
Le rapport onusien a précisé que la carte actuelle de répartition des criquets dans la région se divise en deux fronts principaux. Le premier, au sud, s’étend entre le nord du Senegal et le sud de la Mauritania, où une baisse relative du nombre de criquets immatures et de petits essaims a été observée, malgré la persistance de groupes adultes non matures.

The second front, which directly concerns Morocco, relates to areas of the Moroccan Sahara, where the actual onset of breeding among mature adult locusts was observed in late January, raising concerns about potential developments in the coming weeks.
Le deuxième front, qui concerne directement le Maroc, touche les zones du Sahara marocain, où le début effectif de la reproduction des criquets adultes matures a été constaté à la fin du mois de janvier, ce qui accentue les inquiétudes quant à l’évolution de la situation au cours des prochaines semaines.

FAO also anticipated the continued movement of groups and small swarms coming from Mauritania toward the north, with the possibility that some may reach Moroccan territory and even extend toward the Algeria border, should favorable climatic conditions prevail.
La FAO a également prévu la poursuite des déplacements de groupes et de petits essaims en provenance de la Mauritanie vers le nord, avec la possibilité que certains atteignent le territoire marocain et s’étendent même vers la frontière de l’Algérie, si les conditions climatiques favorables sont réunies.

The report further suggested that certain areas of the Moroccan Sahara could experience accelerated breeding during the current month of February, potentially leading to the emergence of new hopper bands and swarms, which, according to the organization, calls for heightened vigilance and strengthened monitoring and early intervention mechanisms.

Regarding control efforts, the report noted a slowdown in field treatment operations during January, with treated areas not exceeding 45,943 hectares, compared to approximately 82,389 hectares in December, highlighting the need to intensify operations to confront any new breeding wave.

At the regional level, the report recorded relative calm on the eastern and central fronts, with sporadic cases detected in Sudan, and limited locust presence in Egypt, Yemen, and the Saudi Arabia, without swarm activity, while breeding is expected to continue along the eastern coast of the Red Sea.
