The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Appeal in Rabat issued a detailed clarification statement on Tuesday regarding the death of a Malian citizen at a hotel in the city, in response to misleading information circulated on certain social media platforms in recent hours.
Le parquet près la Cour d’appel de Rabat a publié mardi un communiqué explicatif détaillé concernant le décès d’un ressortissant malien dans un hôtel de la ville, en réaction à des informations erronées diffusées sur certaines plateformes de réseaux sociaux au cours des dernières heures.
The statement confirmed that claims alleging a “suspicious death” of a Malian journalist inside a hotel in the capital, and linking the incident to his support for one of the Arab national teams participating in the Africa Cup of Nations or to an alleged interrogation, are unfounded and not based on any factual evidence.
Le communiqué a affirmé que les informations faisant état d’un « décès suspect » d’un journaliste malien dans un hôtel de la capitale, et liant l’incident à son soutien à l’une des sélections arabes participant à la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations ou à un prétendu interrogatoire, sont dénuées de tout fondement et ne reposent sur aucun élément factuel.
The same source explained that, on January 14, 2026, police services received a report from a private medical team indicating the death of a person inside his apartment in Rabat—not in a hotel as had been claimed. Following this notification, the Public Prosecutor ordered the opening of a judicial investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
La même source a précisé que les services de police ont été informés, le 14 janvier 2026, par une équipe médicale privée du décès d’une personne à l’intérieur de son appartement à Rabat, et non dans un hôtel comme cela a été relayé. Suite à cette notification, le parquet a ordonné l’ouverture d’une enquête judiciaire afin de déterminer les circonstances et les tenants de l’affaire.
Within this framework, judicial police officers, accompanied by forensic and technical police units, proceeded to the place of residence, where the identity of the deceased was established as Mohammed Cheikh Tidiane Soumaré, an independent Malian journalist who had entered Moroccan territory on January 2 via Mohammed V International Airport.
Dans ce cadre, les éléments de la police judiciaire, accompagnés de la police scientifique et technique, se sont rendus au domicile concerné, où l’identité du défunt a été établie. Il s’agit de Mohammed Cheikh Tidiane Soumaré, journaliste indépendant de nationalité malienne, entré sur le territoire marocain le 2 janvier via l’Aéroport Mohammed V.
According to the findings of the investigation, a friend of the deceased—also a Malian journalist accredited to cover Africa Cup of Nations matches—had received a text message from him reporting a deterioration in his health condition. The friend subsequently went to the apartment accompanied by Mali’s consul. However, the apartment door was locked from the inside, prompting them to contact emergency services.
Selon les résultats de l’enquête, un ami du défunt, également journaliste malien accrédité pour couvrir les matchs de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, avait reçu un message texte de ce dernier l’informant d’une dégradation de son état de santé. L’intéressé s’est alors rendu à l’appartement accompagné du consul du Mali, mais la porte étant verrouillée de l’intérieur, les services de secours ont été contactés.
Upon arrival, emergency responders forced the door open and found the deceased lying lifeless in his bedroom. Initial forensic examinations conducted by the scientific police revealed no signs of violence on the body. Medications were found beside the bed, along with the deceased’s personal belongings and official documents.
À leur arrivée, les équipes de secours ont forcé la porte et découvert le défunt sans vie dans sa chambre à coucher. Les premières constatations effectuées par la police scientifique ont révélé l’absence de toute trace de violence sur le corps. Des médicaments ont été retrouvés à proximité du lit, ainsi que ses effets personnels et ses documents officiels.
To eliminate any remaining doubt, the Public Prosecutor ordered an autopsy, the results of which concluded that the death was natural, caused by a pulmonary blockage linked to acute high blood pressure, according to the official statement.
Afin de lever toute ambiguïté, le parquet a ordonné la réalisation d’une autopsie médicale, dont les résultats ont conclu à un décès naturel, résultant d’une obstruction pulmonaire liée à une élévation aiguë de la pression artérielle, selon le communiqué officiel.
On this occasion, judicial authorities stressed the importance of verifying the accuracy of information before sharing it, particularly in sensitive contexts that attract wide media attention, warning against the dangers of rumors and their negative impact on public opinion.
À cette occasion, les autorités judiciaires ont insisté sur l’importance de la vérification et de la prudence avant la diffusion des informations, en particulier dans des contextes sensibles suscitant une large attention médiatique, mettant en garde contre les dangers des rumeurs et leurs effets négatifs sur l’opinion publique.
