L’arbitre avait accordé un penalty en faveur de l’équipe marocaine dans les dernières secondes du temps additionnel de la seconde période, poussant certains éléments de la sélection sénégalaise à quitter momentanément la pelouse avant de revenir pour achever la rencontre, conclue par le sacre du Sénégal après les prolongations sur le score de 1–0.
