Taxi Drivers in Tahla Take to the Streets, Escalate Protests and Paralyze Transport Over Poor Road Conditions (Photos)

The city of Tahla has witnessed, since Thursday evening, an open-ended sit-in by second-class taxi drivers, following their decision to spend the night on the streets and halt transport services. This escalation comes in protest against the deteriorating condition of the road network in the city and its surroundings, according to local sources.

This escalation followed a large protest rally held on Thursday morning, during which professionals expressed their dissatisfaction with what they described as the “deplorable and dangerous” state of the roads, which they say has become a daily threat to their safety and that of passengers.

The protesters explained that the poor road infrastructure causes frequent mechanical damage to their vehicles, placing a heavy financial burden on them due to high repair costs and directly affecting their income and working conditions.

These protests are being organized under the umbrella of the Moroccan Workers’ Union, which has declared its full solidarity with the drivers, considering the current situation to reflect what it described as “marginalization and neglect” affecting this vital sector.

As a further step of escalation, taxi drivers announced their intention to march on Friday morning toward the Taza Province Governorate headquarters, in order to convey their demands directly to the provincial governor and call for urgent intervention to repair roads and improve safety conditions.

The protesters raised banners calling for immediate action by local and provincial authorities, urging the opening of a serious and responsible dialogue that would lead to concrete solutions, put an end to the professionals’ suffering, and ensure the continuity of this essential public service under safe conditions.

The union warned that ignoring these demands could push professionals to engage in more escalatory forms of protest in the coming days if the situation remains unchanged.
